Coronation Street’s Alex Bain is looking to the future ahead of his exit after sixteen years of playing Simon Barlow.

Alex, 22, is departing the ITV soap next week after landing the role aged just six.

He’s had a turbulent few months as Simon, having hit the bottle following his dad Peter’s (Chris Gascoyne) exit, facing drink driving charges in court and then being entwined in a sinister cult headed up by Rowan Cunliffe (Emrhys Cooper).

Throughout his years, he’s also faced a bullying ordeal, physically abused his adoptive mum Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) and dealt with Peter’s alcoholism and wrongful imprisonment for the death of Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan).

In the last few years he was recruited by Harvey Gaskell (Will Mellor) as a drug dealer, working alongside Jacob Hay (Jack James Ryan) in a controversial county lines plot.

Sounds like Simon is well deserving of a new start, which is exactly what’s on the cards when he jets off to work with Peter on a yacht.

Describing the long-running continuing drama as ‘the backbone of [his] life’, Alex said on his departure: ‘I felt very positive about it, but I am 22 now and maybe it is time to see what the future holds.

‘It isn’t just a job, you become part of a family and I will always have those people in my life. They aren’t just colleagues, they are friends. Obviously anybody leaving feels sad about saying goodbye to people but any sadness is a small part of it.’

He continued: ‘That doesn’t take away the excitement and anticipation. With Chris going it felt like the obvious thing for Simon to follow his dad, Simon has been through so much and he was lost without his dad around. Simon heading off on his adventures means I can have new ones of my own.’

His end will be tinged with sadness as Leanne only just arrives back in Weatherfield prior as he’s packing his bags. She’s been ‘reality coding’ at one of Rowan’s retreats and has been cut off from her family.

What these retreats actually entail remains to be seen.

However, he will eventually get some happiness: ‘He is literally sailing off into the sunset with his dad and there is hope for his future’ Alex added.

‘I don’t have to grieve for him as he hasn’t been killed off. He hasn’t gone to prison. I can just imagine him having a great time with his dad, the two of them drinking orange juice on the boat in the middle of nowhere.

‘I imagine their relationship is the best it has ever been.’
