Greene County woman charged with failing to care properly for horses, authorities say

CAIRO, N.Y. — A town woman is charged with failing to care properly for 15 Peruvian Paso horses at a Kirwin Road farm, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

On Thursday, May 2, the Sheriff’s Office and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals began an investigation after receiving a complaint about the horses’ treatment, according to a press release.

On Tuesday, May 7, with the assistance of the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA, deputies executed a search warrant on the property to examine the horses’ condition, police said.

“Through the investigation, all 15 horses were able to be examined by veterinarians to determine the body scale and their condition. … It was determined by veterinarians that 13 of the horses in question scored a 3 or less on the Henneke Scale,” a tool used to measure body condition of a horse, police said.

As a result, on May 7, Skylar Nolan, of Cairo, was charged with one count of failure to provide proper sustenance, a misdemeanor. Nolan was released with an appearance ticket for Cairo Town Court.

This case remains under investigation and the Sheriff’s Office “anticipates that there will be more arrests and charges filed in the near future,” according to the release.
