Letter: Putting aside anger for peace

Both United States and Vietnamese forces committed terrible assaults, leaving large numbers dead or maimed.

Some may have wanted to punish the leaders and fighters responsible, dragging out the conflict until those responsible were punished.

Fortunately, the leaders of the two nations put aside desires for revenge, and negotiated an end to the war, and to the deaths and maiming. Fifty-one years later, they are still at peace.

Regardless of current or past wrongs, Israelis and Palestinians might similarly benefit by sitting down and negotiating, first a ceasefire and release of hostages, then a long-term plan for peace. It will not be easy, but the current situation is morally, and perhaps practically, unsustainable, with risks of one day igniting a much broader war.
