New details released on Oakland Skyline High School graduation shooting

(KRON) — New details have been released about a triple shooting at Skyline High School’s graduation ceremony on its Oakland campus. On May 23, three victims were shot as the ceremony was wrapping up around 7:45 p.m.

According to the Oakland Police Department, the shooting stemmed from a fight between two groups of people. OPD officers arrested one man in connection to the shooting.

Before OPD officers arrived at the high school, East Bay Regional Parks Police Department officers were the first on scene because they were listening to the OPD’s radio channel and happened to be nearby, parks police said.

Multiple witnesses at the scene told EBRPPD officers that the shooting suspects ran into Anthony Chabot Regional Park toward Redwood Road.

“All EBRPD units responded to the listed area. Three … male juveniles foot-bailed into the Upper San Leandro watershed area upon seeing one of our officers,” parks police wrote.

Officers chased the juveniles, nabbed one of the boys, and searched him. The boy was in possession of a loaded Glock 27 pistol and a car key for a Maserati luxury car, police said. The Maserati was previously carjacked and stolen in Oakland.

Back at Skyline High School, an EBRPD officer found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound in her thigh. “Our officers applied a tourniquet to the victim who was still bleeding, preventing further life-threatening blood loss. The victim was immediately transported to a local hospital,” parks police wrote. A second victim was also found at the school, and a third victim was located at a hospital.

A 90-minute manhunt for the two at-large boys ended when officers found the duo. All of the shooting victims are expected to survive, OPD said.

The melee happened as the ceremony was wrapping up, and many students and families had already left the campus, school district officials said. Oakland Unified School District Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell wrote, “Some people remained on the field wrapping up the celebration and some staff members were cleaning up. I want to appreciate the staff from Skyline and the District who were on site at the time and immediately responded to take control of this challenging situation until police could arrive.”

Johnson-Trammell called the incident “heartbreaking and absolutely unacceptable.”

Johnson-Trammell wrote, “I know that many of us share this collective frustration and devastation, and that our hearts are with the victims of this incident, their loved ones, and every graduate and their extended community who attended the ceremony to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime achievement.”

The graduating class of 2024 missed their middle school graduation ceremony because of the COVID pandemic, and experienced their first year of high school online in distance learning, the superintendent noted.

The investigation into the triple shooting is ongoing and a $15,000 reward is being offered for more information to leads to additional arrests. Anyone with videos or photos is asked to email them to Anyone with information should call 510-238-3426.

So far, the Oakland Police Department has not released the name of the arrested adult. The three juveniles’ names were not released because they are minors.
