No, Oakland University in March Madness is not in the East Bay

(KRON) — Bay Area residents filling out a men’s March Madness bracket this week will see a familiar name. Oakland University, a 14 seed, is hoping to pull an upset against No. 3 Kentucky.

While the East Bay’s biggest city does have a rich basketball culture, this school is not located anywhere near the Bay Area. Oakland is located in Rochester, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit.

The school gets its name from Oakland County, the Michigan county where it resides.

Oakland’s basketball team is called the Golden Grizzlies. They qualified for March Madness after winning the Horizon League’s regular season title and tournament.

If Oakland is to be the latest March Madness Cinderella story, they have a tall task up first. Kentucky boasts the second-highest scoring offense in college basketball and a championship coach in John Calipari.

Bay Area residents looking to cheer on a hometown team in the tournament should keep their focus in the East Bay and root for St Mary’s. The Gaels, based out of Moraga, are a No. 5 seed after winning 18 of their final 19 games heading into the tournament.

On the women’s side, Stanford is once again representing the Bay Area. Legendary coach Tara VanDerveer led the Cardinal to a No. 2 seed, and the team is hoping to win its fourth national championship.
