Oakley police officers rescue sea lion that wandered onto road

(KRON) — A sea lion in the street is not something you see every day, but that was the exact conundrum that two Oakley Police Department officers were faced with on Sunday night. The cops successfully rescued a sea lion that wandered onto a road.

The officers were called to the corner of East Cypress Road and Knightsen Avenue just before 9:30 p.m. for the report of the lost animal. Nearby citizens helped them corral it into a specific area.

OPD says the officers struggled to coax it into the back of their patrol car but they were eventually able to. It appeared to be uninjured.

Officers called the Marine Mammal Center, but nobody was available to pick the animal up. The officers set the sea lion free at a local marina, allowing it to plunge back into the San Joaquin Delta.

“Sea? We’re not lion when we say OPD is the best police department around,” OPD said on Facebook.
