Possible school trip policy changes discussed as Hinton wrestling coach’s resignation accepted

HINTON, Iowa (KCAU) — School board members in Hinton discussed some changes to the activity handbook for the district. Some of the updates include social media and state tournament planning, food, and lodging.

Dozens of Hinton parents were on hand for Monday night’s monthly school board meeting. Some spoke during the public comments section, asking that additions be made to the school’s policy book regarding school trips as it pertains to bags checks, printed itineraries, contact information and other issues.

When teams make it to state tournaments, one of the rule changes would require the head coach to have a meeting with the administration to go over the team needs and itinerary. Another new rule would require a trip itinerary to be shared with and approved by the school administration before being shared with the members of the team and parents.

Another change proposed for the activity handbook would have staff members “share with your program that inappropriate comments which impact the team or school may have consequences.”

KCAU 9 spoke with superintendent Ken Slater about these additions.

“You use situations to grow stronger to get better, to learn and improve,” Slater said. “We do a lot of the right things, and there’s always areas that you can improve on. That’s what we’re working on here, you know we have to continue to work to improve, to realize the full potential of what we have at Hinton and to have the very best for our students because that’s what they deserve.”

The board unanimously accepted the head boys’ wrestling coach’s resignation, which went into effect immediately.
