Reigning Cy Young winner Blake Snell to sign with Giants: reports

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The San Francisco Giants have reportedly landed one of baseball’s most accomplished pitchers just days before the 2024 MLB season is set to begin. Multiple MLB reporters said Monday that reigning National League Cy Young winner Blake Snell agreed to a deal with the Giants.

The contract is for two years and will pay Snell $62 million, ESPN reported. Snell, 31, can opt out of the contract after the 2024 season.

Snell won the 2023 NL Cy Young award, given to the league’s best pitcher, after posting a league-best 2.25 ERA for the San Diego Padres. He also won the 2018 American League Cy Young award while with the Tampa Bay Rays.

However, Snell’s free agency lasted nearly the whole offseason before he reportedly agreed to take a short-term deal with the Giants.

“He entered the winter hoping for a long-term deal, but the market at the price he sought never materialized, and he winds up in San Francisco,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan said.

A likely reason for Snell’s shorter contract is concerns about his durability. His two Cy Young seasons are the only times he has topped 130 innings in his eight-year career.

The Giants’ new third baseman, Matt Chapman, was in a similar free-agency situation to Snell. Chapman, a former star for the Oakland A’s and Toronto Blue Jays, signed a similar deal with the Giants in early March.

San Francisco opens its season on March 28 in San Diego against the Padres.
