Settlement settlement records harsh numbers in the West Bank

The left-wing Peace Now movement said today, Friday, February 16, 2024, that Israeli settlement in the West Bank set record numbers in the first year of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

In its report, the Israeli movement also noted an increase in settlement activities since the start of the war on Gaza on October 7.

The report covers settlement activities during the year 2023, which is the first year of the current Netanyahu government, which was formed at the end of 2022.

The movement, which is active in tracking settlements, said: “The formation of Netanyahu’s government in December 2022 created unprecedented conditions for the expansion of settlements in record numbers.”

This included “promoting a record number of construction plans, minimal law enforcement against illegal settlement activity, significant budget allocations, and most importantly, almost unconditional political support for settlers, even in cases involving violence against Palestinians,” she added.

In this context, she noted, “In 2023, settlers established at least 26 new illegal settlement outposts, of which at least 10 were established during the war since October 7, 2023, and at least 18 of them were agricultural settlement outposts.” “.

She stated that “in direct connection with the establishment of settlement outposts, about 1,345 Palestinians were forced to flee their homes due to violent attacks carried out by settlers.”

She said: “21 Palestinian communities were displaced and uprooted, 16 of them during the war since October 7, and 5 communities before that.”

She added that in the same year, “a record number of 12,349 housing units were promoted in West Bank settlements, not including settlements in East Jerusalem.”

She added that during the same period, “the legalization of 15 illegal settlement outposts was advanced.”

Outposts are small settlements, usually consisting of mobile homes, established by settlers on private Palestinian land without the approval of the Israeli government.

As for the settlements, they consist of fixed houses that are established with the approval of the Israeli government.

Peace Now also indicated that “nearly 3 billion shekels ($831 million) have been allocated to roads in the settlements, which constitutes about 20% of the total Israeli investment in roads.”

Based on “Peace Now” data, approximately half a million Israelis reside in 146 large settlements and 144 settlement outposts established on the territory of the West Bank, not including occupied East Jerusalem.
