Sioux City officials present upcoming improvements to wastewater treatment plant

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Sioux City officials were at a local Sierra Club meeting Tuesday night to give a presentation on the upcoming improvements to the wastewater treatment plant.

Officials are meeting with different local organizations to explain those improvements to the plant and why they are needed. The current plant is more than 60 years old and should be replaced every 20 years.

Currently, the plant is getting some emergency repairs done on one of the treatment processes. Those repairs should be complete by next March and need to be done before phase one of the project can start.

“Our plant has lived three times its life and it’s at a critical position right now,” Sioux City Utilities Director Tom Pingel said. “In fact, these last couple of months have been pretty rough and things are breaking down at a relatively quick pace. So this is going to bring some capacity to the plant, which will allow more industries to move to town, but the focus is reliability and safety.”

Phase one of the project is set to start in about 16 months and construction should be complete by 2035.
