Sky confirms rights hammer! Competition has no chance

Sky started the all-important rights year 2024 with a big exclamation mark. In particular, the new tender for the broadcasting rights of the Bundesliga will be in focus in the summer. First of all, the pay-TV giant has something else to cheer about.

In addition to the Bundesliga, 2nd League and DFB Cup, Sky (read more here) primarily relies on the English Premier League when it comes to football. The best football league in the world with stars like Erling Haaland attracts spectators. And it will stay that way for a few more years.

Sky retains Premier League

The broadcaster announced this on Thursday afternoon (February 8th). A statement said that a new agreement had been reached with the Premier League regarding broadcasting rights. The new contract is valid until summer 2028.

Since 2019, Sky has been showing the games of Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Co. Back then, they were able to steal the rights from their competitor DAZN. The situation on the market has not changed since then.

“An important right”

Sky is allowed to broadcast around 380 games not only in Germany, but also in Austria and Switzerland (but not exclusively here). The current contract actually ran for just under a year and a half. But now an agreement has been reached ahead of schedule.

“With this exclusive extension, we have secured an important right that clearly underlines our leading position in sport,” says Barny Mills, CEO of Sky Deutschland.

Sky beats DAZN

One can assume that other bidders were also interested in the rights. Last but not least, DAZN may also have flirted with a return of the Premier League.

For Sky, however, the new contract is an absolute coup – and an important signal to the competition for the Bundesliga tender. The broadcaster has big plans and wants to grab a large part or even all of the Bundesliga live rights in the summer.
