Status of Starlink in Zimbabwe: Government Provides Clarity in Parliamentary Session

In a recent parliamentary session, officials from the Ministry of Information Communication Technology (ICT), Postal and Courier Services, and the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) shed light on the status of satellite internet provider Starlink in the country.

Legislators Raise Concerns about Internet Access and Starlink Licensing

During the session, legislators raised questions regarding the improvement of internet access and the licensing of Starlink, known for its faster and more affordable internet services, ZBC News reveals.

Chegutu West Legislator, Honourable Shackmore Timburwa, inquired about the absence of Starlink licensing, emphasizing its potential benefits.

Starlink’s License Application Awaited: Possession of Equipment Deemed Illegal

POTRAZ Director General Dr Gift Machengete responded, stating that Starlink has yet to apply for a license to operate in Zimbabwe. He emphasized that possessing Starlink equipment within the country is currently deemed illegal, and any such equipment found will be confiscated.

Challenges Faced by Zimbabwe’s ICT Industry and Efforts to Address Them

In addition to addressing the Starlink issue, Dr Beaullar Chirume, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of ICT, highlighted the major challenges faced by the ICT industry. She also expressed concerns about network accessibility in certain areas.

“The ICT industry is being affected by a plethora of challenges that include spillover effects of load shedding, distorted tariff regime, and low foreign currency reserves.”

Dr Beaullar Chirume also took the opportunity to highlight ongoing discussions with fiscal authorities for the review of the current tax regime. The Ministry believes that such a review is essential to alleviate restrictions on investment in the ICT sector.
